I think everything said here is pretty darn true. Though I would add that in some cases *coughminecough* money is a SEVERELY limiting factor. Though the job search issue touches on that, my dream job involves creating my own art and you have to spend a heck of a lot of your own money to get anybody to pay you to do that. And usually if you want to retain any creative control.
If it were me, I’d definitely interview people who have succeeded in that business model. When I was an aspiring reporter, I interviewed journalist Brian Raftery, who writes about pop culture for Wired. I really wanted to know how he convinced a publication to actually pay for him to meet the Insane Clown Posse and document juggalo culture. So now I know.
