I thought I’d put up the story on Tumblr in case anyone is curious. 

John and I had received invitations to a couple parties on New Year’s Eve, but he kept stressing to me that he wanted to spend the holiday just the two of us. We spent the day writing resolutions and otherwise getting stuff done before the new year. Then, we got dressed up to stop by the Newseum and then go to Legal Seafoods downtown. 

Here’s a picture we took when we got back from dinner. I had no idea he was going to propose at this point. If I had, I would have probably tried to take a significantly less blurry photo.

Afterward, we changed into pajamas and had a pretty low key evening. We watched the New Year’s episode of Sergeant Frog, played some video games and then I did some journaling about my goals for the new year. As we were watching the countdown, I told John I had never had a better New Year’s Eve. 

At midnight, we kissed and suddenly, John had a ring out and asked me to marry him! I never thought I was that kind of girl, but I started crying as I said yes. Even though we’d talked about getting engaged in 2012, I was completely surprised. I spent the next twenty minutes trying to reach my family- it seems like the phone lines are always tied up for the first few minutes of the new year. 

New Year’s Eve has never been one of my particularly favorite holidays, but now it’ll always be special.
