“Gamer” Girls
(Via: betachan)
True fact.

LOL. I see what you did there. Now, hand me a sniper rifle. I’ll get rid of that for you.

Pretty much a few of the girls I know.
Let me get my P90…

There was something really problematic about this comic to me and it made me feel uneasy though I couldn’t really articulate why. Looking in the notes and seeing some of the blatant misogyny and femmephobia on display tells me my gut feeling was right.
Side-eyeing a whole motherfucking bunch of people rn.

RIGHT?! Like…have you ever actually met someone like this? Really?
Are they really such a pervasive and ever-present problem in your gaming life that you have to bring up how much you hate them at every turn? Quiz every woman you meet who says she’s a gamer so that you can deem her worthy of a title that men don’t get similarly interrogated for claiming?

I ranted about this sort of thing on Dreamwidth a while back and I’mma repost it here when I find it again. But needless to say this kind of shit is why, despite being a lifelong gamer (as in, my first console was a Colecovision), I am constantly having to prove my cred. And why I was so hesitant to claim a femme identity for so long, tbh.

^commentary. It’s like “don’t know if hate” check the notes “ok yeah definitely hate”.

NOPE no hate here! Move along! (I mean it’s not like there are men out there killing women for just being women am I right?!”)

Of course this comic was drawn by a man. Stuff like this makes me feel so unwelcome in the geek community. It really just further encourages men to quiz me and see if I’m “really” a geek, or somehow just “faking it” in order to get my hands on some rare, geeky man meat. I wrote about this in June.

Excuse me, but the creator is very much a woman. I don’t know what gave you the idea that she was a man. :V

My mistake! I guess the particular thread I was following originated at a man named Simon’s Tumblr. It was silly to assume he was the artist since he posted it. With that new information, I’m not sure what to say. I guess it just confirms what men already think about women, that we spend our time cutting one another down.
