Places with free wi-fi in DC →
I had big plans when I first landed my flexible, work from anywhere job. I was going to dye my hair turquoise and magenta. Go jogging in the middle of the day. Rent a villa in Italy for a month and work from there.
One more doable idea that I had was to work from a different location every day, going off of that free wifi hotspot chart. See the city and get shit done. Only, it’s a lot...

Want to start a blog? Let me help →
As some of my close friends know, I wrote the first draft of this blog post about two months ago. But then I got trigger shy. My blog is about analyzing fandom, not making money. I was worried that if I advertised my affiliate program, even if it didn’t cost my readers any money, they would think I sold out.
Eventually, I became okay with that. Because of the whole “not costing...
Slut” is how we vilify a woman for exercising her right to say “yes”....

scottvonschilling replied to your post: File sharing is Magic
I mean, don’t get me wrong, DRM is bad and does more harm than good, but in this case, it has nothing to do with your problem. You’re just using different technologies. It’s comparing apples to oranges… or Apple to YouTube.
Thanks for the clarification, Scott. I didn’t think about the fact that I was comparing downloads to...
File sharing is Magic
After writing about bronies for Ron Paul, I realized I’d gone too long without watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and decided to start on Season 2. I learned during my article research that MLP:FiM is now available on iTunes. Since I’d watched all of Season 1 on YouTube (I don’t get The Hub channel), I wanted to support Hasbro this time by purchasing the episodes.

YOU GOT ENGAGED? congrats! how did i miss this?
I’m not sure! I wrote about it on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, which are my big three. Here’s the Tumblr post I wrote the next morning. Guess we need to come down to Fairfax more often.

Answering questions for my interview with DC Geeks
Here is my favorite so far:
Another quick terminology question: weeaboo. Are we taking it back? Or do we need to wait a bit before it loses its racist connotations?
I was taken aback by your word “racist,” but it’s true. When I reviewed the etymology of the word, I remembered that “weeaboo” was the Perry Bible Fellowship nonsense word that 4chan used as a replacement for any instance of the word...

Some people say the anime industry is dying
As a journalist, I say it’s changing.
Come discuss it with me on my blog.
Sent another email today
And another one last week, as well.
“Can’t wait to hear your response!” I wrote. I’m sure he can sense my overenthusiasm.
And thus my abusive relationship continues.
How long until I let you know who this source is?

Chasing @Horse_ebooks is like trying to hug smoke. →
bridgefigure:
I have a cadre of Russians, so I briefed one contact on Adrian Chen’s @Horse_ebooks offer, thinking she’d put me in contact with someone grateful for an easy opportunity to make some money. I was told off instead:
Um, plenty of people could make it happen, but that address won’t lead to shit.
I thought you were using the IP address or whatnots to track him. NO ONE EVER...

Blogging experiment success
My blogging experiment– in which I’ve given myself just three topics to write about until further notice- has been a success so far. I’ve already blogged more this week than in the last two weeks. Here’s my two latest columns:
1) What I’m Watching: Mawaru PenguinDrum
2) The Inside Story: Four Leaf Studio releases Katawa Shoujo

2012 New Year's Resolutions
1) Grow and expand my career. Write profile pieces I am proud of. Gain recognition as an authority on fandom reporting.
2) Revive my blog. Write at least two times every week. Keep a detailed record of my life and work. Create resources my readers can use.
3) Improve my physical and mental health. Resume jogging. Spend a few nights a week away from computer/TV/phone screens. Devise a list of...

So last night I got engaged!
I thought I’d put up the story on Tumblr in case anyone is curious.
John and I had received invitations to a couple parties on New Year’s Eve, but he kept stressing to me that he wanted to spend the holiday just the two of us. We spent the day writing resolutions and otherwise getting stuff done before the new year. Then, we got dressed up to stop by the Newseum and then go to...

RIAA's Hand Gets Caught in the Torrent Cookie Jar →
paxvalkyrie:
It must be tough to push hard for bills like the Stop Piracy Online Act and Protect IP when your employees or members are downloading illegal files.
And then, the inevitable, hilarious conclusion. This is fantastic news for pirates everywhere; now “somebody used my IP” is an ironclad excuse. If somebody was able to “steal” the RIAA’s IP address,...

It was a customer
A couple people responded to my Femininity Awareness post with comments about how Game Stop staff must be really rude.
I guess I didn’t make it clear enough: it was a customer who approached me. I doubt an actual employee would be as socially awkward, or try to hand me the wrong game.

There's a guy I really want to talk to
But he ignores me. I really want to connect with him though, so I send him an email every week. In the email, I tell him the things I’d love to talk to him about next week, and link him to something I wrote about him the week before.
“Just imagine how much better this would be with your input,” I say.
By now, you realize I’m not talking about a crush. I’m talking...
Femininity Awareness
One year, two of my closest friends, Mitch and Andrew, had a beard growing contest. I don’t think it was for Movember or anything important; they just wanted to see who could go without shaving the longest. Anyway, one day Andrew walks in, completely clean shaven.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Mustache awareness,” he replied. “The sudden sensation that there is...
